Blogging from hospital 102 - the Ultimate IT Guide

Okay, the title of this post is a little misleading - this isn't really a guide or a how-to. Basically I'm just going to share my fabulous portable setup with you...but as to how it's all configured? Well, I'm very lucky to have IT Man to deal with all the messy details. :-)

So...basically, this is what I'm working with.

iPad (with nifty case which flips around so you can stand it up) and wireless keyboard. No, it's not one of the new-generation iPads (people keep asking me that) but it's doing a great job.

And what runs the whole shebang?

Wireless router and dongle (That's the long blue thing. Yeah I know, I think it's a funny name too, but IT Man uses fancy jargon like this all the time without the hint of a smile).

It's all very high-tech, especially IT Man's troubleshooting advice. If my internet connection is disrupted for some reason, I just turn the router off at the wall, wait thirty seconds, switch it on again. Even I can manage that!

All the photos I've used in this and the previous post, I took on my iPhone (are you sensing a theme here?) and emailed from my phone to Blogger (for those who use Blogger, to set this up just go to Settings, then the Email and Mobile tab). And I worked out how to do that without IT Man's help, as he may be expert on many things but he is NOT blog-savvy.

Before you ask, yes, IT Man is the type to always take his own portable wireless internet setup + computer with him on holidays. And despite the obvious inconvenience of me being hospitalized and all, I think he was kind of chuffed to get the chance to give me all his toys to use while I'm in here. Plus the hospital has an RCD protected power supply. Whatever that is.

I'm thinking of taking him somewhere remote on a camping trip one of these days. Somewhere without mobile telephone network coverage. Or would that be too cruel?

Note: I've scheduled this post for tomorrow, and I just got word I'm going to be discharged, so by the time you read this I'll be out of hospital. Yay! I'm going to miss that 24 hour call button though. Don't have one of those at home...

I hadn't known you were in the hospital! I missed your earlier posts.

Glad to hear you've been discharged!

It's good to hear you're out of the hospital. Though, I think you were having the best time a hospitalized person could with you're techy squad of Apple gizmos.

Wow, that's a really sweet setup for a hospital. Does that get charged to your insurance?

Wow! Amazing!
Thanks for that tip on mobile blogging, I just got a BlackBerry myself.

I am thoroughly impressed! Great setup! I hope the staff didn't find it all too troublesome.

Very glad to hear you'll be going home (are home).

Great set up - but the best news has to be that you're going home...yay!

Glad to hear you're going home. Although, in a way it does kinda suck, because that is a pretty sweet get up.

My brother is IT Guy, in my family, and I swear every time he says the word "dongle" I supress a strong urge to giggle. It is obviously a male word, they can't even manage to keep from making computer stuff sound dirty.

Yay for going home. I must admit I have iPad envy.

As they say, don't count your chickens...

I WAS discharged Monday but only lasted 13 hours before going back in. Apparently in super-fancy medical jargon that's what's called a failed discharge. Ahem.

So lucky I had my portable IT setup which came right back with me.

@ RM, no I'm not sure I can swing medical insurance cover for an iPad! But seeing as everything else is covered during a hospital stay in our public system most people could probably afford an iPad or two with the savings they'd make on medical bills.

@Grandpa: Careful, I've heard those things are addictive! Email at your fingertips wherever you go...

@Alison: Actually we hid all the tech gadgets on a high shelf behind the little storage cupboard next to the bed, so not in the way of the staff. And we left them a few free powerpoints too! ;-)

@Tracy: I hear you. Then of course there's the male and female half of plugs, which also doesn't leave much to the imagination. Who knows what new names and devices will come about if women take on a bigger role in IT innovation?

My dear Adina-

Had not read your blog in a while and was shocked to find you in hospital but relieved to see you still blogging. Best thoughts with you, always.
