On following the writer's dream, with a hop, skip, jump...

Who started your writing dream? Was it a book you read, a particular author, or an influential person in your life?

My MG/YA group of Campaigners are holding a blog hop for the next week on this very topic, with some fabulous prizes on offer (as befits such a fabulous group of bloggers). You have one week to comment, and every comment you make increases your chance to win a prize. The prize pool includes query critiques, manuscript critiques and several free books...
As with every good blog hop, each participant links to the next (and the one previous), so pick a starting point from the list below and start hopping! And remember, to be in the running for prizes, you'll need to visit and comment before Thursday, September 22nd.

It may not have escaped your notice that I'm pointing you in the direction of a blog hop which I'm not, in fact, participating in myself. This is partly because I'm incredibly slack and partly because I don't have an easy answer to the above question.

I've enjoyed writing almost since I could first hold a pen, and the writing dream has come from such a percolation of influences over the years that singling out one would be impossible.

As for the dream of being published, I can remember exactly when that began. It was three years ago. It was the day I stopped being rendered impotent by fear, and said aloud, "I am a writer, and I may fail at this, but I am not afraid to try." There may or may not have been tears involved. Heady stuff.

How about you?

I've been writing since I was about seven. I've always loved making up stories. I didn't think of it as a potential career choice, though, until I read The Diary of Anne Frank. Her passion for writing made me realize my own. I thought, "how cool would it be if it was my book on the shelves at the stores?"

I had a similar experience, A. It was Christmas, 2007, and I was filling out one of those obnoxious surveys that were circulated in email every third day asking you all these personal questions which you were supposed to forward to another couple dozen people.

For vocation, I entered, 'Novelist.' Finally. And I have never looked back.

I wrote TONS as a child & in grade school, then stopped during uni because I simply didn't have the time. It was in 2008 that I decided to get serious about writing again, and pursue a childhood dream.

Still trying. Still pushing for it.

Also, I know what you mean about being slack on the blog hop. I'm not doing them right now as there are too many other things going on. I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with the Campaigner blogs, let alone participate in a blog hop. :)

Sounds like a fun fest.
I enjoyed writing as a child and would hand write stories and copy them out in little booklets for my friends. I decided to work towards publication, also probably about 3 yrs ago. I've always had the attitude that you can do anything, you just have put in the time and work and that's how I feel about writing publishable work.

My gran started me off... She's a writer herself, so it's always been something that interested me. :-)

My school had actually influenced me to write. I don't remember why though :/

Thank you all for your comments, and for sharing your take on this journey we're on. Roller coaster? Round-about?

I often feel dizzy, yet somehow I still don't want to get off the ride...
